Underpaid Position Players of 2010, Part 2
If you didn't read part 1, you can read it here
3) Troy Tulowitzki - 3,500,000
Do people understand how amazing this player is? He's one of the few players in the major leagues that can anchor a lineup - and he's a shortstop. That's beyond rare. He's a candidate to wina gold glove, but his glove doesn't get any recognition compared to his bat. With a .315 BA, 27 HR and 95 RBI going into the last game of the season, he should be among the highest paid players in the MLB. Or at least, that's what his statistics argue. (Alex Rodriguez, the highest paid player in baseball, has a .270 BA, 30 HR and 124 RBI) The payment of his contract will progressively increase until 2013 when his contract expires. So in 2011 earn $5.5 mil and in 2012, he will earn $8.25 mil.
2) Joey Votto - 525,000
Nobody could've foreseen Joey Votto's performance this year. 2nd in BA (.323) 3rd in HR (37), 3rd in RBI (112), 1st in OBP (.423), and 1st in SLG (.598). He finished in the top three for all major offensive categories in the national league. This offseason, Votto will go through his first arbitration process. Considering the impact he had on the Reds, he deserves to shatter the record for money earned in arbitration. He also deserves an MVP award.
1) Carlos Gonzalez - 406,000
Another MVP candidate. And he's making less than a million this year. Like many of the others previously mentioned in the list, Carlos Gonzalez will go through arbitration this off season. He's also Votto's biggest competition for the MVP award. Votto finished 2nd in BA. That's because Gonzalez finished 1st. Carlos Gonzalez leads the NL in BA with .336. He's also 4th in HR with 34, just 3 behind Votto. In the RBI category, he has 117, 5 more than Votto. Gonzalez is also tied with Votto in SLG with .598. The NL MVP race should be more than interesting.
