Underpaid Position Players of 2010, Part 1
7) Jose Bautista - 2,400,000
When the Blue Jays signed Bautista for 2.4 million, they might have though they overpaid him. I'm fairly certain no one thinks that way anymore. He leads the Majors in HR (54) and is the only one to pass the 50 mark this year. A power hitter like that deserves a big paycheck. Bautista will also go through the arbitration process this offseason. He will have a big raise for 2011.
6) Billy Buter - 470,000
Billy Butler was good news for a team that didn't have much going for them. The Kansas City Royals finished with just a 67 - 95 record. Billy Butler hit .320. He only had 15 HR and 78 RBI, but anyone who hits .320 deserves a decent salary. Anything over 3,000,000 would be somewhat acceptable.
5) Shin-Soo Choo - 461,000
Choo is a great player. Batting Average above 300, OBP above .400. Over 20 HR and over 20 SB. Over 90 RBI and over 80 Runs. Over 80 BB. The only complaint would be that his strikeout total is over 115. But any player who has such balanced overall statistics is a great addition to any any team. Shin-Soo Choo is the type of player that can make any team better. He also had 14 assists while committing only 4 errors in 2010.
4) Josh Hamilton - 3,250,000
Someone who is a candidate for MVP shouldn't be given this kind of check! He has the highest BA (.360) and SLG (.636) in the American League. He is also 2nd in OBP (.412), and is 5th in HR (32). Hamilton hasn't signed a contract that will leave him out of the arbitration process. Since the Major League panel will determine his contract for next year, expect a large raise for 2011. It's likely to exceed 10 million.
