The Future of the Mets

Disappointed. The Mets are already mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. How does this keep happening? They have a high payroll. They can buy their way into the world series. Not only that, they have young players like Mike Pelfrey, Jose Reyes and David Wright to help out. Then what are they doing wrong? And what can they do to earn the right to sell hot dogs in October?
Mets

First thing is first. They need some changes. Get rid of Minaya. Get rid of Manuel. They're not helping. Managers were being fired by the handful this year. Bobby Valentine is open, why not give him an offer? Make some changes in the office. Things aren't working out right there.

The second step is to make a decision. Are they going to rebuild or are they going to try and win? The Mets have been stuck in between the two for too long. They have to commit to one side. The reason why the 2006 Mets were so good was because of the fact they had no holes in their lineup. Their rotation was strong and they had bats that could hit from 1-8. But now, they have a few places that aren't reliable. Their rotation falls off after Santana and Pelfrey. The bats aren't always there. Injuries hurt them. The bullpen needs help. If you can't address all these at once, rebuild. Get rid of those high paying players and focus ON THE DRAFT. Build the team around David Wright. He's crucial.

Jose Reyes and David Wright. Two Players They Need in Order for a Turnaround

This offseason, the Mets have a lot of work to do. Luis Castillo hasn't been the best news for them. Unfortunately, Mark Ellis may be the best free agent 2nd baseman this offseason.

Ike Davis has been doing well at first, but there are many big bats on the market this year. Konerko, Derek Lee, and even Lyle Overbay could help get some power in Citi field.

Outfield might hit the jackpot. Carl Crawford leads the class with players like Jayson Werth and Magglio Ordonez trailing. Bronson Arroyo, Justin Duchscherer, Jeff Francis, John Garland, Cliff Lee, Ted Lilly and Carl Pavano are all free agents. The Mets need at least another two starting pitchers they can rely on. Enough with this half-ass signings. The Mets need to either go for it, or tear the team down. Choose. New York is waiting for you. Until then, the Yankees will continue to dominate New York.

Mike Pelfrey really isn't that good. Dillon Gee is just as good if not better than Pelfrey. Pelfrey was only so highly talked about because that idiot Olney praised him so much. Of course, people always listen to him. Valentine crushes Jerry Manuel. Minaya sucks, agreed. They need to build around Reyes, Wright, and Ike as you stated. I think they should sign a free agent that they know they are going to get something out of. Drafting doesn't work that well in baseball unless if it is an expiring contract.

I think Pelfrey is a good pitcher, but not a star. With work, I think he could become a solid number 3 pitcher and rotation depth is what the Mets severely lack. The problem with the free agent market is that it's tough for the Mets to judge. So many power hitters have come to NY only to fail in Shea/Citi. (Jason Bay and even players like Beltran. His batting average at home was around .220 I believe)

However, I do believe drafting works. Billy Beane made a great team out of nothing with the A's. The Rays currently have a great team built around the draft. The Mets do have money though, so they could try to emulate the Red Sox or even a smaller scale version of the Yankees.

I agree with your comment on Pelfrey developing into a solid 3 guy. Bay had a lot of warning flags on him. It was a stupid signing that was easily predicted to fail. I stated that the Mets should spend because they have the money. They need to sign one sure thing. When they have an expiring contract, they really need to focus on getting a great haul of prospects. As far as the draft goes, they need a new GM so they don't draft stupid. Minaya embodies the idea of a stupid manager.
