Report: New York Mets' Minaya and Manuel to be Replaced

Looks like the Mets are finally making a change. They recently announced that this will be Omar Minaya's last year as General Manager and the last year for Jerry Manuel as Manager. It is possible for the Mets to keep Minaya within the organization, but it seems likely that he won't return as GM.

The Mets are expected to make their announcement as early as Monday, the day the regular season ends. It will be interesting to see who replaces Minaya and Manuel. The Mets have had a string of less-than-stellar GMs, starting with Steve Phillips. However, it is fairly likely that the Mets will promote one of their own people in order to fill the role of GM. They have the entire postseason to find a GM, but most of them are already with another team. There aren't many "free agent" general managers out there. In addition, the Mets cannot risk starting the off season without a front office. With the new rule MLB implemented, free agency is starting earlier than usual.

As for the manager position, the Mets have a few options. These include Bobby Valentine, Joe Torre, or even Wally Backman, the manager for the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Mets' Short Season Single A affiliate.

Bobby Valentine is the no-brainer choice. He is easily the best free agent manager. I never hide my disgust for Joe Torre. Wally Backman is decent, but Valentine is very intelligent and perfect for the job. He doesn't let the heat get to him.

I was actually very fortunate enough to meet Bobby Valentine, and let me tell you, the man is a genius. Not only would he be a great manager, but I honestly think he should be the commissioner. His intellect on events occurring off the playing field is astonishing.
