2010 awards predictions: NL Cy Young

It's the pitcher's era, but who's the best? Let's get right to it. (All stats are as of September 21st, 2010)

Candidates:
Josh Johnson: 11-6, 2.30 ERA. 183.2 IP, .229 Opp BA, 1.70 WHIP
Adam Wainwright 19-11, 2.45 ERA. 224.1 IP, .223 Opp BA, 1.05 WHIP
Roy Halladay 19-10, 2.49 ERA. 234.2 IP, .249 Opp BA, 1.07 WHIP
Ubaldo Jimenez 19-6, 2.84 ERA. 202.2 IP, .213 Opp BA, 1.16 WHIP
Tim Hudson: 16-8, 2.61 ERA. 210 IP, .228 Opp BA, 1.12 WHIP
Roy Halladay
Will the Doc win the NL Cy Young Award?

League Rankings:
Wins:
Halladay (1st) & Wainwright (1st) & Jimenez (1st)
Hudson (4th)
Johnson (25th)
ERA:
Johnson (1st)
Waignwright (2nd)
Halladay (3rd)
Hudson (4th)
Jimenez (7th)

Verdict:
At this point, you can pretty much eliminate two of the five. Hudson and Jimenez. Even in strikeouts, despite throwing 100mph, Jimenez is 6th in the NL. After the first half, he was the front runner for this award. But once the drop off occurred after the all star break, Ubaldo hasn't been Cy Young material. Though Tim Hudson has been good, he hasn't been the best. Like Clay Buchholz in the American League, he put in a good run. But his numbers simply cannot match the rest.

I think the award will either go to Halladay or Wainwright. Everyone loves the wins statistic. Not only that, the only stat Johnson is leading in is ERA, and both Roy and Adam aren't far behind. Whoever has the most wins, between Halladay and Wainwright, at the end of the season will win the award. Halladay will face Mike Minor who has an ERA above 5. After facing the Braves, Halladay's next start is scheduled to be with the Nationals. Wainwright however, is due to face the Pirates twice. With both starters facing week teams, it is easily possible both starters can finish with 21 wins. It's a coin toss. If it's heads, it's Halladay. Tails, it's Wainwright. Oh, and if it lands on the side, its Josh Johnson.

What do you think? Who do you think will win the NL Cy Young? Post it in the comments to this article, and we'll see who makes more sense. And remember, 2-3 articles every week in October and an INA article every Saturday. So remember to follow this blog and check back often!

I say Doc wins it because voters will overrate him a little bit. I would vote for him too because he did pitch a great season.

I think Doc will win as well, and I think he should. One stat I didn't put here was Complete Games and Doc leads the MLB there. I don't think people give enough credit for players that go the distance, it's a tough thing to do.

Yeah, complete games are infinitely more important than wins. You just don't see the CG as much as you did back then. Pitching has changed so much, and that's why I love workhoses like King Felix; Halladay; and Shields.
