2010 awards predictions: AL Cy Young
It's the pitcher's era, but who's the best? Let's get right to it. (All stats are as of September 20th, 2010)
Candidates:
CC Sabathia (NYY): 20 Wins, 6 Losses. 3.05 ERA. 224 IP, .238 opponent's batting average and a 1.18 WHIP
Clay Buchholz (BOS): 16 Wins, 7 Losses. 2.48 ERA. 159.2 IP, .229 opponent's batting average and a 1.23 WHIP
Felix Hernandez (SEA): 12 Wins, 11 Losses. 2.35 ERA. 233.2 IP, .216 opponent's batting average and a 1.07 WHIP
David Price (TAM): 17 Wins, 6 Losses. 2.79 ERA. 193.2 IP, .219 opponent's batting average and a 1.19 WHIP
League Rankings:
Wins: Sabathia (1st), Price (3rd), Buchholz (6th), Hernandez (19th)
ERA: Hernandez (1st), Buchholz (2nd), Price (3rd), Sabathia (6th)
IP: Hernandez (1st), Sabathia (2nd), Price (14th), Buchholz (38th)
Opponent Avg: Hernandez (4th), Price (6th), Buchholz (7th), Sabathia (12th)
WHIP: Hernandez (3rd), Sabathia (8th), Price (10th), Buchholz (16th)
Verdict:
It's going to be close... At this point, I'm going to rule out Clay Buchholz. He had a great run, and still does have the 2nd best ERA in the AL, but he simply isn't the best arm in the entire league. It's mostly between Hernandez and Sabathia. Price made a nice run, but since he isn't 1st in any of the categories, it'll be tough for him to win. I honestly think King Felix deserves this award. He's only one game above .500, but his stats are unbelievable. 1st in ERA and IP in the league. And among the candidates, he's 1st in Opponent Avg and WHIP... But at the same time, it feels as if he's gone unnoticed. Hernandez may be the underdog, due to the fact everyone loves the Wins statistic. However, I still say King Felix wins the 2010 AL Cy Young Award
