20 Random Baseball Facts

1) Today's tallest major league umpire is Tim McClelland

2) The 2009 Yankees' payroll was the highest of all time to win a World Series. The 2nd highest? 2007 Red Sox. 3rd highest? 2004 Red Sox. In both 2004 and 2007, the Yankees spent over 40 million dollars trying to win than the Sox.

3) Think that's bad? Next to the Yankees' high payroll, the other New York team places second with 149.3 million dollars. But unlike the Bronx Bombers, the "Amazin'" Mets only won 70 games. That averages out to be about... 2,133,914 dollars and 10 cents spent per victory. The Yankees averaged $1,955,817.37 per regular season win.

4) There is actually an unofficial title called the "three great pitchers in the world right now who

are not in the majors". They consist of Yu Darvish, Stephen Strasburg, and Aroldis Chapman.

5) Jason Jaramillo is a switch-hitting catcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Now how many of you knew that?

6) Nolan Ryan holds the record for most no-hitters pitched with seven. Sandy Koufax is second with four. Jason Varitek holds the record for most no-hitters caught, with four.

7) Alex Rodriguez played for a baseball team in Canada... when he was in the minor leagues for the Mariners.

8) Mike Piazza is considered by many to be the best hitting catcher of all time. He has accomplished many feats such as: 10 silver slugger awards, 1993 Rookie of the Year, 1996 All Star Game MVP, 12 times all star, most home runs as a Dodger rookie, most home runs as a rookie catcher, winner of the Ted Williams award, and most home runs as a catcher. Oh, and he also cleared an entire category in Celebrity Jeopardy in 1997 and won. The category happened to be MLB Catchers.

9) Despite being the first pick of the 1999 draft, Josh Hamilton never had a girl friend until after he graduated high school. He didn't want a relationship with the wrong person to ruin his image and hurt his baseball career. Imagine if something like that were to happen.

10) The Royals drafted Kyle Snyder with the 7th overall pick in the 1999 draft. They passed up on Barry Zito, Ben Sheets, Jason Jennings, Alexis Rios, and Brian Roberts. Think that's crazy? Every team in the draft passed on Carl Crawford, John Lackey, Justin Morneau, Albert Pujols, and Jake Peavy. The 1999 draft was a gold mine.

11) Nick Johnson, Alex Gonzalez, Joe Blanton, and Kaz Matsui make as much money as Hanley Ramirez

12) Here's a difficult question. How many outs are there in an inning? Think you know? Wrong, there's six. Bet you said three, didn't you?

13) Jason Bay's first major league hit was a ninth inning home run. He broke his wrist two days later by getting hit by a pitch. The next season, he won NL Rookie of the Year. He also holds the record for most home runs hit in PNC Park.

14) According to wikipedia, Derek Jeter "has a reputation as a reliable contributor in the postseason".

15) Both Hideki Matsui and Ichiro Suzuki were originally right handed
hitters.

16) Sticking with Japanese players, So Taguichi is the only Japanese player who owns two World Series rings.

17) Female soccer superstar Mia Hamm has won four championships on an international level. Her

husband, Nomar Garciaparra, has yet to win any. Should've stayed with the Red Sox Nomar, you were their franchise player...

18) Jonathan Papelbon holds the record for most saves as a rookie. Who's second? Kazuhiro Sasaki in 2001 for the Seattle Mariners.

19) Adrian Beltre tore his balls playing for third base for the Seattle Mariners on August 13th, 2009. No, not baseballs, I mean his "balls".

20) Billy Wagner was born right handed. However, he broke his right arm when he was seven.

So what did he do? He taught himself to throw left handed. Not only that, when he graduated high school, he threw only 79mph. Times sure do change, don't they?
